I am inspired by many things, one of which is music and the culture that surrounds it. I love seeing the band Phish live so have been creating designs inspired by them recently.
The first one I designed is called “Octopus Drummer”. The pattern used on the Octopus is the same as the pattern on the Phish Drummer Jon Fishman’s dress which he pretty much always wears on stage. It is a blue muumuu dress with red doughnut shapes all over it. Any Phish fan would recognize this pattern which is used by a lot of fans in creating fan, ahem, phan, merchandise. I found this quote on Phish.Net:
“I remember I just tried it on, stood in front of the mirror, laughed, and thought I looked like Barney Rubble or something. Then I wrote it that night onstage for a joke. … And I just wore it every night for the next 15 years.”
– Fishman, as quoted in the July 2000 Spin, p. 113
I like the idea of an Octopus drumming and so thought it would be a fun combo. I make them now for babies, kids and women. Currently my women’s clothing is only available on my Etsy shop but the babies and kids shirts can be bought on this website.
My second Phish inspired design is called ‘Melt’. The name is taken from the title of one of their songs “Split Open and Melt”. I had this idea in mind for a while, and wanted to have the words melting and dripping, which I also think is suitable for a really hot summer’s day even if you have no idea who Phish is. I choose summery colors for the racer back tank tops in peach and mint. I created the lettering in Illustrator and used the heat transfer material ‘Crazy Crystal Colors’ from Specialty Materials. This was so suitable for this design as it glistens and shines so really looks like it’s melting! When I discovered it I knew it would be perfect for this design. It looks so pretty when you see it reflecting under the light. The other cool thing about it is it is translucent so changes color depending on what is beneath. I used the purple on both the shirts shown in the photos below and as you can see it looks purple on the mint and hot pink on the peach. This design is on my Etsy shop too.
I am excited to layer it over a solid heat transfer vinyl color next to see how that turns out (rather than just by itself straight on a shirt) I am thinking something that is naturally translucent like wings would be adorable for little girls such as a fairy or a butterfly. Look out for my next post which will include a tutorial on making the layered crazy crystal colors design.
I am sure there will be plenty more Phish inspired designs to come too. Please comment below or email me if there is something you would love to see made!
